What’s it about?

Black Mass explores the life of James “Whitey” Bulger, leader of the Winter Hill Gang that controlled most organized crime in South Boston. The movie focuses on the time when Bulger decided to become an FBI informant against the Angiulo Brothers, upon the insistence of agent, and childhood friend, John Connolly. The catch? Bulger uses this ever-growing closeness with the FBI to effectively increase his control over South Boston, using Connolly to rid the area of rival gangs. With the latter’s bosses becoming more suspicious by the day, how long could this ruse last?

What’s hot?

Johnny Depp turns in a refreshingly masterful performance as a menacing Bulger, blending ferocity with a strong screen presence. The movie stellar cast adds to its aura, with Edgerton and Cumberbatch being especially memorable. With a nice, comfortable pace and slick direction, Black Mass is easily one of the better movies that I have watched in recent times.

What’s not?

Black Mass is one of those movies which builds the plot extremely well, gradually mixing in the components of an explosive concoction, only to go out with a whimper. The storytelling was, at times, quite hard to follow with long drawn montages that are easily capable of losing a viewer’s interest.

I’d give this..

3.5 Stars – This is a great movie in parts. Still demands a watch!
